If you encountered a beautiful cathedral, would you walk all around to fully admire it? Or would you just look at it from the front?
For many of us, the answer would be to view it from one perspective. In our media heavy world dominated by flat, 2 dimensional images from photography and video, we risk losing awareness of the 3 dimensional realm. By learning to work and experience in 3-D, we become more visually aware, see with fresh eyes and cultivate a new understanding of form and space – all essential skills for a developing artist.
Sculpture is an ideal medium for an artist to explore the world of three dimensions. Sculpture classes for the Hamilton/Burlington region at DVSA are designed to accommodate beginner to more advanced students and offer opportunities to get your hands on and begin shaping clay, plaster, soapstone, wire and more. Projects include figure and abstract sculpture, carving and portrait modelling – each providing an in-depth overview of the required tools and materials and a step-by-step guide to traditional sculpture process and methods.
Plenty of group and individual instruction is provided throughout and the collective exchange of ideas and knowledge is encouraged. Clay projects are often kiln fired upon completion to create a finished piece.
Discover the satisfaction of creating in three dimensions as you construct a clay human form using a live model for reference. All facets of hand building and clay modelling techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. You’ll also receive group and individual instruction to further develop your understanding of the elements of sculpture, figure and drapery. No previous sculpture experience is required, but students should have some basic drawing skills. *Please note: there will be no class on October 12*

This course introduces the artmaking processes of molding and casting using modeling clay to model a one-part silicone mold. You’ll develop three small sculptural forms that fit within the dimensions of a Solo cup, then select one for mold-making and casting. The emphasis throughout the project will be on developing modeling techniques, an attention to detail and craftsmanship, and an understanding of material properties. Explore how translating a form from one material to another affects its tactile, visual and conceptual qualities. You’ll also learn more about positive and negative space, casting methods and material behaviour. No experience required—for all levels. Material fee covers all tools and casting materials, including silicone rubber and modeling clay.

Discover the delicate and novel art of sculpting with wire as you create a whimsical tree on a rustic rock base. In this 1-day workshop, you’ll merge your imagination with wire and simple hand tools to form your own original tree sculpture approximately 9” tall. All materials are provided by John, but you will need a pair of needle nose and linesman pliers. No experience required—for all levels.
