Students registered in a Pottery class in the current term may take advantage of open studio times to continue developing their work and technique. Come for a single session or benefit from the discounted rate available by purchasing a 10 visit card (to be presented at the time you sign in). Want your studio time for free? Illustration Essentials

Illustration is an evocative form of visual communication. In this studio course, students will examine a wide range of creative approaches that give visual form to abstract concepts and ideas. Emphasis will be placed on rigorous brainstorming, matching form to content, non-literal thinking and risk-taking. Students will be introduced to the fundamental theories and practices in the field of contemporary illustration. Students will examine posters, maps, packaging, folding toys, book covers, magazine layouts, and more. Work will be executed in an array of media including gouache, acrylic paint, conte, colored pencil, pen and ink and watercolor. Work will be supported by technical demonstrations, slide presentations, and critique. Students are encouraged to bring work samples to the first class. This course qualifies for the Certificate in Art and Design Studio Skills.  Thursdays. 6 weeks.

The combination of type and image is a vital form of visual communication conveying complex ideas, construct meanings, implied narratives, and emotions. Students will explore the relationship between type and image across print and digital media. Course projects will combine visual and verbal elements to create sophisticated design, while looking at the formal considerations of materials in art and design production. Students are encouraged to use traditional media and digital computer programs, with an emphasis on the exploration of and through materials, process, and iteration. This design course is an introduction to the potential and expressive qualities of contemporary typography. Topics include the anatomy of the letterform, distinctions between typefaces, and shaping the page with type. Students will be introduced to contemporary graphic designers and their impact on visual communication and the written language. Students should be prepared to create work in either Adobe InDesign or Adobe Illustrator.  This is a qualifying course towards the Certificate in Digital Media Skills and the Certificate in Art and Design Studio Skills.
