About
Susan Outlaw

Susan was born in Mainz, Germany, 1973. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1975 and settled in a small, rural community in Southern Ontario. Weekend hikes with her family influenced an early love for the natural world and even as a young child, Susan was enthusiastically using paint to convey what she saw and experienced in nature.

Today Susan resides with her husband and two children in Ancaster, Ontario, a historic community located on the Niagara Escarpment, with access to rich farm lands, large tracts of forest, and pockets of small town living. Susan draws inspiration from the area and the diversity of the changing seasons.

Many of Outlaw’s paintings are a response to a scene that has moved her in an emotional or spiritual way: “My work maintains a contemplative focus on nature and its restorative, rejuvenating power. Urban dynamics, oppressive commutes, and the hectic pace of life threaten our spiritual and emotional health and have moved me to paint landscapes that offer people an escape, a moment of reflection, and a return to peace and groundedness”.

Susan supplements her keen interest in landscape painting with still lifes, and architectural, or portrait commissions. She has also been asked to paint several classics by some of her favourite masters.

Susan continues to offer classes each season at Dundas Valley School of Art. She is a long-term member of the Hamilton Women’s Art Association and is represented by King St. Gallery, Niagara-on-the-Lake.
