Jody Joseph

B.A., J.D.

Jody Joseph is a Dundas-based painter and collage artist who teaches at DVSA, and at private workshops in Canada, the US and in Italy. She can often be seen painting outside on streets, sidewalks and parks in Dundas and Hamilton. Joseph’s work has been exhibited widely in Canada, the US and Italy. Locally, she is represented by Gallery on the Bay in Hamilton.

At DVSA, Joseph teaches painting (in the studio and out on the street), experimental drawing and collage. In Italy, she offers intensive workshops for new and established artists. Over 40 of Joseph’s local students have come to Italy with her, joining other artists from around the world for an immersive program of painting.

Joseph has also been active as a curator, most recently as the inaugural curator of the TBA Artspace in the new Atrium of Dundas’ Carnegie Gallery.

Joseph’s work and her teaching reflect her deep interest in the Modernist vernacular—shallow, “flattened” space, bright colour, gestural application of paint and celebration of the everyday.

Joseph received early art training in her native Chicago, and later at the International School of Art in Umbria, Italy where she studied with renowned painters Nicolas Carone, Wayne Thiebaud, Andrew Forge and Jake Berthot, among others, all of whom she thanks from the bottom of her heart. She holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from the University of San Francisco.
