Alexandra Oliver

M.A., M.F.A.

Poet, performer, essayist, editor, critic, and translator, Alexandra Oliver was born in Vancouver, BC. Her 2013 collection, Meeting the Tormentors in Safeway, received the Pat Lowther Award and was named a Canadian Poetry Book of the Year by The National Post. She co-edited (with Annie Finch) Random House/Everyman’s one-hundredth anthology in the Pocket Poets series, Measure for Measure, An Anthology of Poetic Meter. Alexandra is currently preparing for the release of her third collection, Let the Empire Down (Biblioasis 2016), co-editing the Toronto formalist journal The Rotary Dial and working on a book of essays.

BACKGROUND & TRAINING
Alexandra holds an M.A. in Drama and Cinema Studies from the University of Toronto and an M.F.A in Creative Writing from the Stonecoast Program at the University of Southern Maine. She also has CELTA certification through the Center for English Studies/International House in New York. Her areas of specialization include traditional prosody, performance, translation, public speaking/rhetoric and writing about film and art, as well as helping students and professionals of all backgrounds to produce dynamic and effective texts for academic and business purposes.

My poetry is about observation, taking in the ordinary in the same way a film camera would, recording everything and using imagination and form to shape what I see into virtual “home movies”.
