The History of the Tulip in Art
Throughout the history of flower cultivation, no other flower has had the impact of the tulip. Following its discovery in Turkey in the 16th century, a frenzy known as Tulipomania gripped Europe. The prices were so high that, in some cases, the cost to commission a well-known artist to paint a flower in bloom was less than the price of a single bulb.
Join Margaret and step back in time to discover why these colourful, sculptural flowers have long inspired the art masters. This talk includes an introduction to the artists, a review of their works through the span of traditional representation to a more contemporary style and a look at the history and popularity of tulips in Canada.
