About
Catherine Weir

DVSA

Catherine Weir is an active member in the arts community in Hamilton. She is on faculty in the Ceramics Department at Dundas Valley School of Art and at Mohawk College. As an active member in the Potters’ Guild of Hamilton and Region, Catherine held executive positions for five years, as well as a six-year period as committee chair for the Guild’s Permanent Collection. In 2012, she was asked to become a mentor for those members within the guild that specialize in the raku process. This involved a year long mentorship with seven participants who were juried into the program. A successful exhibition of the work was held at the Carnegie Gallery in Dundas. Catherine has won several awards at juried exhibitions including ‘Best in Show’ from the Potters’ Guild of Hamilton and Region, the Green Bear Award for ‘Best Foot Forward’ from her peers within the organization and an Ontario Craft Council Design Award. As an arts volunteer, she has helped to organize two province wide juried craft exhibitions.

Catherine’s pieces are collected throughout Canada and have travelled as gifts to many countries in the world. She achieved an honourable milestone when her piece was chosen as a gift to the City of Kaga, Japan from the Mayor of Hamilton. Catherine’s work has been recognized through publication in the American Ceramics book entitled ‘Mastering Raku’ by Steven Branfman. Her work was also selected for the popular book series ‘500 Raku’.
